"It’s not clear that stress has an effect – because when we’re exposed to a cold virus, even a slight exposure, can be sufficient for an infection."

Then why do people catch just a few colds per year? They're exposed to a new cold virus only a few times per year?

"Vicks is an example of a 'counter irritant' and they still give them that name, even though the idea that you can cure internal problems by creating external irritations has been discarded. The idea was that you’d draw the blood and toxins out by irritating the skin."

They say its "medicated vapors" suppress coughing, but I never understood why you can't just breathe the vapors without rubbing anything on your skin.

"Dextromethorphan, which may be on the label as 'DM' is a cough suppressant. There is a lack of evidence showing it works for colds though – in adults and children. Codeine is the other cough suppressant you may see in cold medications, but appears to be ineffective as well."

Then why are they still used in cold medications? If they're ineffective AND have side effects, aren't they worse than homeopathy?

It might help remove mucus from the pharynx, but it probably doesn't reach down into the trachea. To rinse the nasal cavity, you could expel the water out your nose. I think the salt just keeps the solution isotonic to prevent swelling and irritation.

Johns Hopkins did a study in the last couple years that showed a 50% drop in colds among subjects who gargled with warm salt water daily. Anecdotally, I've gone well over a year without a cold since I started doing it, and my office is a damn incubator.

I've never bothered eating garlic as a way to prevent colds, but I have found that it seems to do a good job of getting rid of a sore throat, if eaten raw. Is there any science behind that?
